Individual Therapy

I embrace a person-centered approach and I put a huge emphasis in building a collaborative relationship with my clients; my experience involves working with both adults and teens. There is not a “one-size fits all” when it comes to therapy, so it would not make sense to only use one therapeutic approach. I feel it is extremely important to continuously check in, adapt and evaluate with each other as we go through this journey together.

I believe there are huge benefits in integrating techniques from Polyvagal Theory, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Mindfulness/Grounding, and Narrative Therapy. Depending on what topics you want to work through, and which approaches you work well with, will help guides us with which methods touse.  These approaches are incorporated to address anxiety, depression, burnout, interpersonal relationships and family dynamics.

I have experience working with severe trauma; I maintain the Tri-Phasic Model and work with my clients towards Empowerment and Resilience building. This involves creating a safe and stable environment, body self-regulation and reconnecting to meaningful life activities. We are not defined by our painful past experiences, but rather we can empower ourselves to heal from them. I have completed both Cognitive Processing Training from Medical University of South Carolina, Certified Clinical Trauma Specialist Training, and Complex PSTD Training from Arizona Trauma Institute. In addition, I have participated in an extended Healing Trauma Course, focusing on Polyvagal Theory and Techniques and Somatic Healing. I have also completed a course on Bioenergetic Therapy.

I have completed a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training with the goal of incorporating both restorative and yin yoga to help support the work done during our sessions together. For those interested, yoga can be built into the work we do together and you will be provided with custom yoga sequences targeted to help release tension and communicate signals of safety within your body based on the topics we work through.

As an Expat myself, I understand the struggle and challenges that come from relocating to another country. I strive to be a place of support for those with these challenges as they begin to settle into a new life abroad. Building a sense of self in a new country takes support, reassurance, patience, and compassion.

Incorporating nutrition and well-being is a core element of the therapeutic process. Sometimes we lose focus on other aspects of our well-being when things are overwhelming and challenging. I want to shift the focus to your sleep cycles, eating habits, physical exercise and caffeine intake.  By learning to listen to our bodies and understanding how to support them better, we empower ourselves to develop healthy lifestyle changes.

I have found that all of these components create a safe opportunity for both adults and teens to create space for compassion and growth while healing from triggers and painful past experiences.

There is a beautiful quote from Viktor Frankl- an Austrian Neurologist and Psychiatrist who survived the Holocaust;

Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

When we are able to learn to listen to our bodies, we allow ourselves the ability to maintain control and promote positive growth and change. I think it is truly beautiful what we as humans are capable of and I would be honored to go down this journey with you.

Take the first step

After submitting a contact request form, I will send you an email to schedule our first call. I always offer a 30-minute free introduction session with anyone who is interested in working together. This allows us time to get to know each other a bit and ask any questions we may have. Afterwards, you are able to take some time and think if you feel like working together would be a nice fit. Once your decision has been made, we can arrange for our first session. Sessions typically last between 50-60 minutes- unless otherwise agreed upon.

Duration

The duration and frequency of our time together varies with each individual. Just as there is a no-size fits all for which therapeutic approaches to use, there is not time frame that suits everyone’s needs. As we begin to work together, we will create a treatment plan that works for you. This will be a point of reference as we continue on this journey together. We can schedule our sessions for weekly, bi-weekly or what best suits your schedule.

Payment

My hope is to create an environment where mental health is a priority and one that is available to all. For this, I work on a sliding scale based on your income. I want to build a relationship of trust and confidence between the two of us and therefore welcome a conversation at any time if you have any questions regarding payment and fees. IDEAL is used for those who are in The Netherlands. If you are located outside of NL, we will discuss other options for payment.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, I kindly ask for no less than a 24-hour notice, otherwise you will be charged for the session.

Areas we can focus on together

The topics we discuss in our sessions are based on what you would like to work on. I have experience working with trauma and sexual abuse, but that does not limit the scope of what can be discussed and worked together. I have clients that work with me on various topics, for example: depression/anxiety, stress management, trauma, time management, improving well-being, burn-out, creating sustainable routines and life style changes, and emotional support- to name a few.

How Do I Know if Therapy is Right for Me?

Deciding to begin therapy is a personal decision. Life can be challenging and it is important to have that extra support. Whether you are facing challenges in your professional and/or personal life, having someone in your corner to provide a judgement-free space that is objective and unbiased could bring balance and support into your life. It is easy to push our needs aside and focus on someone or something else, but it is important to remember to take time for yourself.

By incorporating therapy into your schedule, you are deciding to put yourself first and focus on areas that may need a bit more support. Therapy is not a sign of weakness, but rather one of self- preservation.

Qualifications & Accreditations
Confidentiality

All of our sessions and topics discussed are 100% confidential. The only exception to this if there is indication that you may harm yourself or others. In this situation, I am required by law to involve the proper authorities.

All documents and data will be stored digitally on an encrypted password protected computer. Your name will not be associated or attached to any documents to ensure your confidentaility.

How is therapy conducted

Can I prescribed medication?

No, I am not a medical doctor. Some of my clients do take medication, while others progress well in therapy without medication. If you want to be evaluated for psychiatric medication, please contact your huisarts (GP). If you are already taking medication, I can coordinate care with your doctor.

Do I accept insurance?

I do not accept insurance.

What can I expect from therapy?

Once you have made the decision to work together, you may be a bit apprehensive about the process. Many people feel nervous about their appointment. Therapy is a shared journey. I will be with you on this journey, but ultimately, it is yours. I do not have answers to all of your questions or concerns, but I will always be there to listen and ask thoughtful questions. Your answers to these questions will help shape the direction of our journey. You can always expect to be respected and heard.

Cancellation policy?

If you are unable to make a session or need to reschedule, I kindly ask that you provide at least a 24-hour notice. Otherwise, you will be invoiced for that appointment. An occasional exception may be made in the case of an emergency. It is important that we need consistently in order to build our relationship and create progress.

How often will we meet?

In the beginning, it is ideal that we meet once a week; I find it’s important to give ourselves the time and ability to get to know and trust each other. I do understand that weekly appointments may not work for everyone, so I do understand the need to be flexible and I am always willing to work with your schedule to find the best time for us.
